Spectacular Carrara marble sculpture depicting Medusa.
Provenance Venice, private collection.
A peculiar work because its dimensions are truly remarkable!
The young woman has a perfectly beautiful face, which is neither terrifying nor deformed by fear, it almost seems to express suffering. Some scholars, such as Patrick Haughey, say that such suffering would be due to snake bites and the fact that Medusa is about to turn into a monster.
Medusa is a figure from Greek mythology, together with Steno and Euryale, she is one of the three Gorgons. According to the myth, the Gorgons had the power to petrify anyone who crossed their gaze and, of the three, Medusa was the only one not to be immortal; in most versions she is beheaded by Perseus.
The work as a whole is of incredible value and workmanship. It presents an extraordinary veining. The marble is crystalline and clean, homogenous, truly enchanting.
The anatomy and attention to detail of the face is elevating. The snakes are perfect and intact.
A work of exclusive quality, a lot more unique than rare.
